Aquaculture!

Updated: Nov 3

WHO ENJOYS SILVER PERCH GRILLED, BAKED OR EVEN SMOKED?

What more could you want than to be part of a busload of excited guests wondering where on earth we are going?

A few tourists were commenting that they were looking forward to a better understanding of the agricultural industry and hoped they would hear from a farmer.

The concept of a "Mystery Tour" sets certain expectations for participants, who book the tour in anticipation that it will meet or exceed their expectations. Joanne, also known as Jo-Jo, an experienced Tour Operator, is committed to providing them with an unforgettable experience.

Following the standard welcome and housekeeping announcements, Jo seamlessly transitions into the day's itinerary, setting the tone for our journey to the first destination.

On the way we hear interesting facts about the route we are travelling. Within an hour from Bundaberg, we arrive at our morning tea destination. Waited on, like royalty, we enjoy a home-cooked morning tea. Scones like Grandma made with homemade jam and cream, tasty little sausage rolls and savoury food, for the weight-conscious!

After eating we have a walk to appreciate our surroundings before leaving the area.

Getting on the bus we can hear, in the background, “Slim Dusty” quietly singing.

Jo loves the microphone and soon takes over from Slim Dusty when she announces that all will be revealed on our way home, as to who was listening to the history shared today. The trivia games will identify those who were attentive and reward them with a prizes.

Our next destination is a farm that, due to its status as a commercial enterprise, does not permit public visits. We get to hear the inspirational background of those behind, this, our second stop.

Jo has worked with the owners for several years and the family always welcomes her, with her guests, to a delicious homemade lunch and a guided tour of this amazingly different farm.

The farm established Mango Trees primarily, but a few years ago diversified and as entrepreneurs decided to establish an aquaculture site.

Yes… A Fish Farm.

Risky business!!

Currently, they have twenty-four one-hectare grow-out ponds under cover.

After extensive trial and error, they decided to cultivate the widely consumed Silver Perch. This has evolved into a multi-million-dollar enterprise, resulting from decades of diligent effort, strategic planning, and unwavering determination.

It is a fascinating tour, we get to see the grow-out ponds, the purging tanks and the unit that transfers the fish from the property in aerated tanks down to Brisbane each week, another interesting fact about farming.

After an enriching experience, we proceeded to visit another unique venue on our return to Bundaberg.

It was a great day, a fun day, and most importantly, a memorable day.
